Witnessing to the Jehovah's Witnesses
in a passive yet effective way

Here you will find methods for witnessing to the Jehovah's Witnesses (abbreviated J-Ws; legally known as the Watchtower, Bible and Tract Society with headquarters in Brooklyn, New York, USA). The technique used here is significantly different from the more common confrontational approaches. Following the guidelines given in the Bible for teaching others (Colossians 4:5,6; 1 Peter 3:15), this method is both gracious and respectful. While most approaches try to persuade the J-Ws of doctrines they are trained to refute, this approach simply asks them to explain some of their doctrines that are self-contradictory. No arguing is involved and no one gets upset. This method is based entirely on documents authored by the Watchtower Society and most are available at this site.

[If these presentations are too long to present and you want only a paragraph to say, see below.]

To use this method effectively it is essential to understand how it is different from the confrontational approaches. The typical witnessing methods establish a doctrinal battleground by presenting lines of reasoning that contradict the J-W belief-system. The presenter usually attempts to convince the J-Ws their religious teachers are wrong and that they need to leave the J-W organization. But loyal J-Ws reject the reasonings of outsiders as being illogical. The only thoughts they accept as being *logical* are the teachings of their directors and they have been conditioned to doubt even their own thinking abilities. The more loyal they are, the stronger they believe their directors are the channel of God, and therefore the more likely they are to resist this confrontational method. Only a rare, disloyal J-W who trusts his own thinking abilities, will respond positively to this standard approach.

However, the method I propose does not generate a battleground between the presenter and the J-W. The Bible's guidelines show we should be gracious and respectful (Colossians 4:5,6; 1 Peter 3:15), not fighting (2 Timothy 2:14,24,25).  Instead, the only battle that concerns us is the battle between the J-W directors and God.

So how can someone lead a J-W to discuss such strategic issues without being contentious? That is what the methods featured at this site do. To ensure that this does NOT become a contentious argument, these methods ONLY discuss doctrines the J-Ws firmly believe. It is easier to lead the J-Ws to affirm doctrines they are supposed to believe than it is to persuade them of doctrines they refuse to believe and have been taught to refute. Therefore, our approach will be to discuss doctrines they do believe but which also contradict the authority claims of their directors. Then you will ask which side they will choose. Will they choose loyalty to their religious directors or loyalty to the doctrines they have been teaching you, namely what constitutes True Worship?  As you will discover from using the approach detailed below, some J-Ws will abandon current fundamental religious doctrines just to stay loyal to their directors. In such cases J-Ws cannot be convinced of even their own doctrines, so they certainly will not be open to any religious ideas you might present.

So the subject is not contentious, but what about the technique itself, is it argumentative, wrestling with verses and trying to persuade? No, you, the presenter, will never try to persuade the J-W of anything, you won't need to. They will already believe that True worship is essential. You will only ask a few very logical questions that can only be answered with "Yes" or "No". No matter which answer they choose, you will not debate or even try to persuade. You will not even need to give them a hint as to the right answer.

The principle underlying all these presentations is Jesus' statement  "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other . . .” (found at Luke 16:13; Matthew 6:24). While this was said in reference to the love of money it applies to human masters as well. A person may imagine he can serve two masters but Jesus explained eventually one will be forced to choose between the two and thus, in effect, love one and hate the other. The J-Ws, without realizing it, serve two masters, the Watchtower directors and "Jehovah" (their preferred name for God - see Psalm 83:18). Through the approach detailed below, the J-Ws will discover that their religious doctrines collide with their organizational doctrines, forcing them to choose between Jehovah or the Watchtower directors.

Consider this question and incredible answer:

You ask:  "If I were to agree with your publication right here, <pointing to a specific issue such as angel-worship being unacceptable and offending to God> and conclude that anyone who ever did such a thing was, at that time, unacceptable to God and offended Him, would I be welcome to join your organization?"
Their incredible answer:  "No, if you agree with our publication that such action is a gross sin and that anyone who ever did this was unacceptable to God at that time, we would not allow you to be baptized and would expel you if you were already a member."
See the details of this approach using  the Jehovah's Witnesses current official charter and the issue of true worship.
List of useful methods for talking with the JWs
This is also a short approach. It may be easier but the issue is not as significant. The discussion is centered around the JW view of paradise earth.
This approach is a lot longer and covers more issues.
If you use the above long-version you may follow through by studying with the J-Ws in their "Knowledge" book. and find this information useful.

Lastly, if you really feel the above presentations are too long and want a short presentation of just one paragraph, consider this:
"I am not prepared to help you today but I know that you have been misled into thinking your leaders have been faithful and discreet since World War 1 and have the commission to speak as a prophet in God's name. Following a false prophet is dangerous according to 1 Kings 13. I will pray for you that your eyes will be opened. If you ever want to know the truth, let me know and I can introduce you to someone who can help you."

A book written by a JW

A JW has written an outstanding book critical of the Watchtower Society's authoritarian policies along with a few of its doctrines. While it is rare for a JW to write something critical of the Watchtower, it is unheard of for an active JW to write such under his own name and publish it professionally. The book is "Three Dissertations on the Teachings of Jehovah's Witnesses," by Greg Stafford.

What is even a greater surprise is that Stafford is recognized as a leading researcher and defender of the JW belief system. His first book, "Jehovah's Witnesses Defended: An Answer to Scholars and Critics.", defends a few of the Watchtower's doctrines. This book is itself remarkable because Stafford is not an official writer for the Watchtower and there is an unwritten Watchtower policy that all "spiritual food" is to come exclusively from the JW headquarters.

Stafford's latest book will shake any JW that reads it. I wish every JW could read it. While JWs are forbidden from reading books written by ex-JWs this work will always be 'safe', even if Stafford were ever to leave the organization, it was written while "in" the group. (The Bible book of Ecclesiastes is still good material, even though Solomon later left his faithful course.)

One way to get this book into the hands of JWs would be to order copies of this book and donate it to a local public library. It is available from Elihu Books.

More . . .

An article on Jehovah's Witnesses and the subject of worshiping Jesus was published in 2001 in the Christian magazineChristian Research Journal, and is available online (Vol. 23 #4) through the publishers (the Christian Research Institute, published 4 times a year, presided by Hank Hanegraaff, founded by Walter Martin, Their web site is www.equip.org.) This could be used very effectively in connection with the ministry presentation described here.
